The Raging Success of Use Your Own Cup Day 2019

80 cafes celebrating. 500+ Instagram shares. National radio hype. Magazine features. Totally single use cup free cafes. Enthusiastic humans. Kind businesses. This is what the 11th of December looked like.

Use Your Own Cup Day 2019 was the first of its kind and went off with a BANG.

A bang that rippled across the country in the most natural way possible. There was no hesitation, no questioning; New Zealand simply stood up and did it. Those who already have their heads screwed on and use reusable cups everyday, had fun being celebrated, while those who needed it, got a loving push in the right direction.

The highlights

• Big Fig and Otago University have gone completely single use cup free!! This was announced on UYO Cup Day

• Athletes Ameliaranne Ekenasio (Silver Fern) and Emma Gilmour (rally driver) got involved

• Polly & Grant from MoreFM National Radio were super excited on air

• Catalyst, Taste Nature, Fedeli, Big Fig, Pembroke Patisserie, The Federal Diner, and Get Fixed Bicycle Cafe went completely single use cup free for the day

• Councils were on board

• Nearly 100 cafes gifted free and/or discounted coffees in the spirit of waste free coffee

• Amazing media stories online from places such as The Wanaka Sun, Nelson Magazine, Focus Magazine, and Fashionz

The main highlight of the day was watching cafes nationwide stand up to lead the charge. Customers were treated to free coffees, crazy discounts, and a whole lot of love for their reusables. The New Zealand hospitality industry truly demonstrated that the days of puzzled looks from baristas when reusables are handed over, are long gone.

Use Your Own Cup Day was a massive success, and all going well, it will never happen again. Why have another day for something that’s just common sense?
