Throwaway Cup Free ~ Use Your Own Cup Day 2019

11/12/2019

I was there for most of the day yesterday and can report we had no unhappy customers as a result of the suc free day. All were accepting of it and many commented that it's a good idea, shrugged their shoulders and got their coffee cups or borrowed an Again Again cup. Others just decided to sit in to have their coffee when they probably would have ordered a takeaway.

Our business 'Treat Cakes and Pastries'  has just had its first birthday. We have been working hard to reach our targets and one of those was to be more sustainable and environmentally aware. [Being only] UYO has helped us to move towards those targets. Use Your Own is new to many of our  customers so we still have much work to do there to promote UYO and develop a stronger local following.

At The Mussel Inn we really try to encourage people to relax and take a few moments to enjoy their day, drinking their coffee here - out in the garden in the summer, or by the cosy fire in the colder months. For many years we didn’t sell takeaway coffees at all as we believe that people shouldn’t be rushing around so much and they should just take the time to pause. But we have succumbed to keeping them happy and if we’re asked, we now offer drinks to take away. If they really must rush, we love it when people bring their own cups in for us to fill. We do also have reusable cups that customers can buy to take their drinks away in, or give as a gift. But still, there’s nothing like just taking a moment or two, to sit in one place and enjoy ! Cheers, Jane.

Newly Throwaway Cup Free Every Day

Excitingly we have gone suc free this week and it has been surprisingly much smoother then we expected. We have had zero problems with customers since the change over! When asking for takeaway our new thing is that we don’t do single use cups anymore but you can sit in and enjoy, byo cup or borrow a cup.. people quickly change their mind too ‘Oh I can just have here’ or ‘Awesome, I’ll borrow a cup’, they easily adjust to this new way of having their coffee..I can’t believe how easy it is to not have takeaway cups and I’ve really enjoyed watching this normal old convenient way of drinking your coffee change so smoothly. Our borrow a cup system helps a lot, and customers, local and tourists are very impressed with the system, asking for it to move nationally. Mostly over these past few days we’ve had nothing but positive feedback and excited people, I’m so glad we made this change, I’m feeling ahead of the game and helping the planet one takeaway coffee at a time, and we’re really feeling the support and encouragement from our community.

From this moment on, I will not be using any single use cups. You are welcome to hang about and have your coffee here or if you simply MUST take it away, BYO cup or you may lease a cup from me with a deposit of $10 or you can buy one outright for $15. ☕️ People have been saying that this is a revolution but it isn’t, more of an evolution, a natural progression.
